Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A 59-year-old man will remain in custody pending a formal bail application following his arrest on a charge of kidnapping. Mnyamezeli Lakhona Tete, who was arrested by the Hawks over the weekend, is alleged to have been involved in the abduction of a 31-year-old foreign national from his business premises in North End back in April.

Tete appeared in the Gqeberha magistrate’s court on Wednesday, where his case was postponed to June 18 for a formal bail application. The Gqeberha serious organised crime investigation team of the Hawks, along with provincial crime intelligence and Makhanda K9 members, worked tirelessly to make the arrest.

He is charged alongside Mzoxolo Eric Grwayibana, 38, who was arrested on May 16 and later released on bail of R3,000. It is alleged that the two men, possibly with the help of others, accosted the victim on April 5 and forced him into an Opel Mokka at gunpoint.

Details of the Kidnapping

The victim, who was alone at his business premises, was held at gunpoint by the suspects. They then allegedly used his cellphone to call his mother and demand a ransom. The victim was found six days later in Kariega, after being transported to three different addresses in Gqeberha in an Audi.

The vehicles used in the kidnapping, a Toyota Fortuner and an Audi, were later identified. The joint team traced the vehicles and found the Toyota Fortuner at a car wash in Gqeberha, leading to the arrest of the first suspect at one of the addresses where the victim was believed to have been held.

Arrest of the Suspect

Tete’s arrest came after a search warrant was executed at his home in Motherwell on June 4, where an Audi A4 was seized. A joint operation was launched, and on June 9, Tete was spotted driving a VW Tiguan in Fort Beaufort. He attempted to evade arrest by running into the bushes, but was apprehended.

There is a possibility that Tete may be linked to another kidnapping case involving a 34-year-old woman who was abducted in front of her house in Kariega on March 13. She was released unharmed two days after the incident.

Hawks provincial head Major-General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya commended the team for their efforts in ensuring the arrest of the alleged culprits. The investigation is ongoing, with Tete remaining in custody until his formal bail application on June 18.
