A California police officer fatally shot a woman during a confrontation in Corona, leading to the arrest of another man on charges of murder.

An unidentified Riverside County Sheriff’s Office deputy encountered multiple individuals in Corona on Tuesday, prompting a pursuit when the subjects attempted to flee. The motive for the initial interaction remains unclear.

As the deputy chased the suspects, a physical altercation ensued when a man attacked the officer. In the heat of the scuffle, the woman involved began assaulting the deputy, resulting in him firing his weapon. Tragically, the woman succumbed to her injuries at a nearby hospital. Her identity has not yet been disclosed.

The deputy grappled with the male suspect, later identified as Eric Nourani from San Diego, who allegedly attempted to seize the officer’s firearm. Fortunately, bystanders intervened to assist in restraining Nourani until law enforcement arrived.

Eric Nourani has been taken into custody on charges of murder, attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, mayhem, and resisting arrest with violence, as per the sheriff’s office statement.

Despite the arrest, the 33-year-old has yet to face formal prosecution, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Authorities were able to charge Nourani with the woman’s murder under California’s accomplice liability for felony murder law, which permits prosecution of individuals deemed significant participants in a felony with reckless disregard for human life.

While Nourani remains in custody, the deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation led by the state’s Department of Justice.
