Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Authorities have launched a global search for a retired county sheriff deputy who disappeared while hiking on the Greek island of Amorgos. The missing tourist, identified as 58-year-old Albert Calibet from Hermosa Beach, California, set off from the port settlement of Aegiali in the northwest of the island early in the morning, heading towards Katapola, the main port along the western coast. The hike typically takes around four hours, but when he failed to return after eight hours, a friend reported him missing.

Rescue operations were immediately initiated, with reinforcements called in from Naxos island to aid in the search. Albert’s friends and family are preparing to travel to Greece to assist in the rescue efforts, with his brother Oliver expressing hope for his safe return.

Experienced Hiker and Seasoned Sheriff Deputy

Albert is described as a seasoned hiker in good physical shape with sharp survival skills, despite being retired from the sheriff’s department. Having visited Greece 50 times, he is familiar with the island of Amorgos where he went missing. According to reports, he has completed the Aegiali to Katapola hike several times in the past, making his disappearance all the more puzzling.

The deputy mayor of Amorgos, Calliope Despotidi, shared insights into Albert’s familiarity with the island, stating that he may have sought shelter in caves along the route due to the heat. Albert’s girlfriend, Debbie LeShane, took to social media to appeal for information, highlighting the ongoing search efforts involving helicopters, rescue teams, and search dogs.

Concerns Over Extreme Heat

The disappearance of Albert comes in the wake of tragic news involving British presenter and celebrity doctor Michael Mosey, who was found dead on the Greek island of Symi after succumbing to heat exhaustion during a solo walk. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by extreme temperatures, prompting Greek authorities to issue warnings and implement safety measures.

With temperatures soaring and Greece facing a mini lockdown to combat the heatwave, concerns for Albert’s well-being amid the sweltering conditions have heightened. The island of Amorgos is under a severe high temperature warning, emphasizing the need for caution and vigilance during outdoor activities.

As the search for Albert intensifies, his loved ones are holding onto hope for his safe return, rallying support from both local authorities and the community. The global effort to locate the missing sheriff deputy underscores the importance of preparedness and awareness when engaging in outdoor pursuits, especially in challenging environments.
