FORT MYERS, Fla. – A tragic incident unfolded in Fort Myers, Florida, on Sunday night as police fatally shot a man who was wielding a knife and approaching officers despite repeated commands to drop the weapon.
On the evening of June 9, Fort Myers Police Department received a distress call from a woman and two small children who were seeking refuge in a carport on Grand Avenue and Waltman Street. The woman informed the officers that her husband, Willy Lumaine, aged 33, was in the process of harming their roommate.
Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers discovered an open door and a trail of blood inside the residence. Acting swiftly, they established a perimeter and issued verbal warnings in an attempt to locate Lumaine and any potential victims.
Shortly thereafter, Lumaine was seen smashing a rear window with a large knife. Despite multiple commands to surrender, he emerged from the window holding the weapon and what appeared to be a dismembered body part. Ignoring the officers’ instructions, he proceeded towards them, prompting the police to open fire.
Lumaine was struck by the officers’ gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene. Medical assistance was rendered, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. Inside the residence, investigators discovered evidence of a violent altercation, including the mutilated and dismembered body of the roommate. No other individuals were found injured.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has launched an investigation into the fatal police shooting, which is being conducted in parallel with the Fort Myers Police Department’s homicide inquiry. As per standard protocol, the officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward. The community is reeling from the tragic events that transpired on that fateful night in Fort Myers.
