ATLANTA – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has apprehended a man in connection with a fatal shooting on a county transit bus that culminated in a pursuit involving law enforcement agencies.

Press Release:

Following an officer-involved shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, the GBI has been called upon to conduct an independent investigation. The Georgia State Patrol requested the GBI’s involvement on June 11, 2024. The incident resulted in the fatal shooting of a man by a suspect identified as Joseph Grier, aged 39, from Stone Mountain, GA. Fortunately, no troopers or officers sustained injuries during the altercation.

Initial reports suggest that on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at approximately 4:20 p.m., a Gwinnett County Transit bus picked up passengers in downtown Atlanta. Among the passengers was Grier, who engaged in a dispute with a male passenger. The situation escalated into a physical altercation, during which the male passenger brandished a firearm. Grier managed to seize the weapon and proceeded to threaten other passengers with it. Subsequently, he shot the male passenger and instructed the bus driver to flee the scene while wielding the gun at passengers. Multiple law enforcement agencies initiated a pursuit as the bus headed north into Gwinnett County and later east into DeKalb County. Throughout the chase, the bus collided with several police vehicles. Despite having its tires punctured, the bus continued to evade authorities. A Georgia State Patrol Trooper intervened by firing his patrol rifle into the bus’s engine compartment, causing it to malfunction and come to a halt.

The pursuit concluded on Hugh Howell Road in Stone Mountain, where Grier was apprehended without further incident. The gunshot victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was tragically pronounced dead. Additionally, the bus driver received medical attention at a local medical facility. The identity of the deceased individual is being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Atlanta Police Department and the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The GBI will oversee an independent inquiry into the use of force during the incident. Once the investigation is concluded, the case file will be handed over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
