HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB/Gray News) – Tragedy struck in Hartford as a construction worker lost his life after being hit by a speeding driver while on duty on Wednesday.
The incident took place at the intersection of West Boulevard and South Whitney Street where the worker, identified as 54-year-old Jose Diaz-Nieves, was part of a team working on a Metropolitan District Commission project.
According to Hartford police, Diaz-Nieves was struck and killed by a vehicle travelling at high speed through the construction zone.
The driver of the vehicle, 25-year-old Tommy Nguyen, was apprehended at the scene after his car malfunctioned. Nguyen is now facing charges of manslaughter, reckless driving, operating a vehicle without insurance, and driving with a suspended license.
Additionally, two passengers who were in Nguyen’s vehicle were transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Hartford police Lt. Aaron Boisvert mentioned that the deceased construction worker was a private contractor employed by the MDC.
Nguyen has been remanded in custody on a bond of $1 million as the investigation into the crash continues.
Authorities have confirmed that the incident remains under active investigation by Hartford police.
