Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A man from Mojave has been handed a 14-year prison sentence in connection to a fatal DUI crash in Oroville, Butte County. Elpidio ArevaloBeotello, aged 30, had previously pleaded guilty to charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, hit and run, and other related offences, according to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey.

The incident took place on the evening of August 11, 2023, when ArevaloBotello was driving a Nissan sedan westbound on Ophir Road. It was reported that he ran a red light, causing a collision with a Jeep Cherokee travelling southbound through the intersection.

The impact of the crash resulted in the Nissan spinning into a motorcycle that was stationary in the eastbound oncoming turn lane on Ophir Road. The motorcycle driver, identified as 61-year-old Jeffrey Brooks of Olivehurst, and his 66-year-old fiancé passenger sustained serious injuries and were taken to a local hospital.

Tragically, twelve days after the accident, Jeffrey Brooks passed away due to the injuries sustained in the crash. His fiancé remained in hospital for several days with multiple broken ribs. Additionally, a passenger in the Jeep also suffered moderate injuries as a result of the collision.

During the sentencing hearing, the driver of the Jeep recounted how Brooks had warned him about the impending collision by gesturing towards his vehicle. This warning prompted the driver to brake, preventing a more severe impact on his vehicle. Brooks’ fiancé also shared that he had managed to throw her from the motorcycle just before the collision, potentially saving her from further harm.

A written statement from Brooks’ son was read out in court, expressing the impact of ArevaloBotello’s actions on their family and others involved in the crash.

Despite the defence attorney’s request for probation or a lighter prison term citing his client’s lack of criminal history, Butte County Superior Court Judge Jesus Rodriguez handed down a 14-year sentence. The judge emphasised ArevaloBotello’s attempt to evade responsibility by fleeing the scene, abandoning the vehicle, and falsely reporting it stolen after the crash.

As part of the sentencing, ArevaloBotello was also ordered to pay criminal restitution totalling $39,621 to the victims of the accident.
