DOUGLAS COUNTY– Authorities are currently conducting an investigation into a tragic homicide that took place late Tuesday evening following a physical altercation.
Shortly after 10:30 p.m., law enforcement received reports from witnesses who had observed two men engaged in a physical fight at the intersection of E 25th Terrace and Franklin Road in Lawrence, as per a media release.
Upon arrival at the scene, a deputy from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office discovered both individuals on the ground, with one of them unconscious. Despite immediate efforts to provide aid by responding deputies and officers, the victim, identified as 43-year-old Christopher Allen Lickteig, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old George Luke Miller, was apprehended and taken into custody for questioning at Lawrence Police Headquarters. He has since been arrested on a requested charge of first-degree murder.
It was revealed that both Lickteig and Miller were residents of the Lawrence Community Shelter at the time of the incident.
Investigators are still piecing together the events of that fateful evening, including the nature of the relationship between the two men. At this preliminary stage of the inquiry, detectives have not found any indication of weapons being involved in the altercation, nor have they recovered any at the scene. Interviews with multiple witnesses have already been conducted, and efforts to gather additional evidence and follow up on leads are ongoing.
