The driver who sustained critical injuries when a substantial rock crashed through their windshield on Highway 1 last week has tragically passed away, as confirmed by authorities speaking to CTV News Vancouver.
The victim, a 34-year-old woman whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, succumbed to her injuries following the harrowing incident.
The shocking event unfolded at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, leaving the driver severely wounded. Law enforcement officials initially described the object that struck the vehicle as “unknown,” but subsequent investigations revealed it to be a sizable rock, comparable in size to a volleyball.
Although the collision occurred in the vicinity of the Willingdon Avenue exit, authorities have ruled out the possibility that the rock originated from an overpass.
“The rock seems to have been propelled from a passing vehicle, but the specific type of vehicle remains unidentified at this point,” explained Cpl. Melissa Jongema in an email correspondence with CTV News Vancouver.
Law enforcement agencies have disclosed that there are no further developments to share at this time regarding their ongoing inquiry into the incident.
