A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday in a North Nashville apartment, resulting in the death of 18-year-old Malachi Rybka. Metro Nashville police responded to a report of shots fired at the apartment complex located in the 1000 block of Edgehill Avenue around 2:35 p.m.
Upon arrival, Rybka was discovered deceased at the scene, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds, as detailed in an arrest affidavit. Dtarious Watkins, aged 24, has been taken into custody in connection with the case.
This marks the 13th teen fatality in Nashville this year and the fifth within the past three weeks. In 2023, a total of 17 homicide victims were identified as teenagers, highlighting a concerning trend of violence impacting the younger population.
During the investigation at the scene, a witness provided crucial information to law enforcement. The witness recounted seeing Watkins arrive at the complex, where he proceeded to instruct her to park near the apartment before concealing his identity with a black mask. Shortly after, the witness heard gunshots and observed individuals fleeing the area while Watkins approached her vehicle. Instructing the witness to drive away, Watkins stashed a gun in the center console before being dropped off near Charles E. Davis Boulevard.
Subsequent analysis of surveillance footage from the area corroborated the witness’s account. Furthermore, the witness disclosed that Watkins entrusted her with disposing of his bloodstained tennis shoes and socks, which she agreed to burn.
Police apprehended Watkins at a residence in the 200 block of Charles E. Davis Boulevard, where they seized three 9mm handguns and a black mask in connection with the investigation. The authorities are diligently working to piece together the events leading up to Rybka’s tragic demise.
