Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A 35-year-old Arlington woman was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in connection to Tuesday’s early morning crash that injured a Virginia State Trooper on the Capital Beltway.

Details of the Crash

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Tuesday when a trooper responded to a report of a sedan stopped in the northbound lane of the Capital Beltway/I-495 near the exit for Little River Turnpike/VA Route 236 in Annandale. The trooper approached the sedan to talk to the driver, but the driver refused to cooperate.

As the trooper was trying to communicate with the driver, a Jeep Cherokee collided with a tractor-trailer that had come to a stop because of the sedan blocking the lane. The impact caused the Jeep to spin and collide with the patrol car, which then struck the sedan. Unfortunately, the trooper, who was standing next to the driver’s side of the sedan, was hit by the vehicle.

Injuries and Arrests

The trooper and the sedan driver were both taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. The Jeep Cherokee driver, identified as Joanna F. Hatch of Arlington, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

The driver of the sedan, 43-year-old Erica D. Bernard of Albright, West Virginia, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, obstruction, possession of a schedule I or II substance, refusal of a blood/breath test, and improperly stopping a vehicle on a highway.
