BEIJING (AP) — The Chinese government announced on Wednesday that a Chinese man, identified as a 60-year-old former Chinese naval officer named Ruan, had sailed a small boat into a strategic river mouth in Taiwan. The man, who was acting on his own accord, has been detained by Taiwanese authorities and will face punishment upon his return to China.
There are suspicions that the man’s military background may have led to an attempt by China to test Taiwan’s detection and defense capabilities. However, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, clarified that this was purely the individual’s personal behaviour.
Responding to questions at a news conference, Chen stated that authorities from Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party should not overreact and engage in political manipulation over the incident.
China claims self-governing Taiwan as its territory and asserts that the island must come under its control. The Chinese military frequently sends warplanes and ships towards Taiwan and conducted a large exercise with numerous aircraft and vessels just last month.
The small boat was initially detected off Taiwan’s coast on Sunday but was only interdicted when it began interfering with ferry traffic across the Tamsui River. The river leads to the capital, Taipei, and flows into the Taiwan Strait, which separates Taiwan and China.
The Taiwan Strait serves as a crucial transit point for global commerce but is also known for its challenging winds and tides. This has sparked speculation on whether the small boat managed to make the journey from the Chinese coast independently or was launched from a larger vessel.
While transport links have been reestablished between the two sides over the past two decades, China’s ruling Communist Party imposes strict restrictions on the travel of serving and retired officials.
