On June 11, a tragic incident unfolded in Española as a 28-year-old man, identified as Jeffrey Martinez, was shot to death by police after hitting an officer with a stolen Jeep in a Walgreens parking lot.
Española Police Chief Mizel Garcia recounted that the department received a report of a stolen vehicle at Walgreens around 6:15 p.m. Upon arrival, two officers approached the stolen Jeep, and Martinez attempted to flee in the vehicle. In his attempt to escape, Martinez crashed into the store building, striking one of the officers who was later treated and released for injuries.
New Mexico State Police spokesman Wilson Silver stated that during the encounter, the officer discharged their duty weapon, fatally striking Martinez. The exact number of shots fired was not disclosed by either Silver or Garcia. Despite the efforts of the officers to render aid, Martinez succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
