Accident – Death – Obituary News : SAYBROOK — The man who was fatally shot at his Tryon Road residence on May 31 has been identified as John Perry, a 63-year-old resident, according to Ashtabula County Coroner Chief Investigator and Administrator, Amber Stewart.
The incident unfolded when Ashtabula County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call reporting that the man had allegedly brandished a firearm at children around 7 p.m. that evening. As stated in an official press release from the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office, the situation escalated when Perry also pointed the weapon at deputies before retreating into his home.
Sheriff William Niemi disclosed that in response to the escalating threat, the Ashtabula, Lake, and Geauga County SWAT team was dispatched to the scene. Negotiations ensued for several hours, during which Perry reportedly fired shots at the SWAT team’s vehicles. In response, the team retaliated, resulting in Perry’s tragic demise.
Amber Stewart confirmed that the cause of Perry’s death was a gunshot wound, although the exact number of shots remains undetermined at this time. The final determination regarding the cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy conducted by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.
