DC Superior Court Findings on Carjacking Turned Homicide

During a recent court hearing on June 7, DC Superior Court Judge Renee Raymond determined that there was probable cause to believe that a defendant was responsible for a carjacking turned homicide.

The Alleged Perpetrator: Kayla Kenisha Brown

22-year-old Kayla Kenisha Brown is facing charges of unarmed carjacking for allegedly stealing a vehicle with 55-year-old Leslie Gaines inside from the MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Details of the Incident

Court documents reveal that Brown crashed the stolen vehicle into the United States Attorney’s Office and attempted to flee the scene with the keys in her possession. However, she was apprehended by the Metropolitan Police Department.

Gaines, who suffered from multiple sclerosis, was found unconscious at the crash site and later succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital.

Evidence Presented in Court

The lead detective from the MPD testified about evidence linking Brown to the crime, including video surveillance footage from the hospital and a phone call interview with Gaines’ daughter.

Despite arguments from the defense regarding the nature of the carjacking and the victim’s condition, Judge Raymond found probable cause for the charges.
