A man has been handed a sentence in connection to a tragic shooting incident that took place during a hunting trip on New Year’s Day 2020, resulting in the deaths of a father and his 9-year-old daughter in Colleton County, South Carolina.

Sean Peterson, aged 33, entered a guilty plea to two counts of negligent use of a firearm while engaged in hunting, as confirmed by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). As a result, he has been sentenced to five years in prison and an additional four years of probation, following the time he has already served.

According to the SCDNR, Peterson discharged his firearm at a noise coming from the bushes without properly identifying his target. This careless action led to the tragic deaths of Lauren Drawdy, 9, and Kim Drawdy, 30, as identified by the Colleton County Coroner.

Initial reports indicated that a group of four hunters were engaged in a deer drive along Barracada Road in Walterboro when the tragic incident occurred. Unfortunately, the Drawdy family members were mistakenly shot as they were mistaken for deer during the hunting activity.

Sean Peterson was taken into custody by the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office in July 2020 in connection to the tragic hunting accident that claimed the lives of a man and his young daughter.

The SCDNR expressed their appreciation for the dedicated efforts of their officers, investigators, supporting agencies, and prosecutors throughout the handling of this case.
