A 51-year-old man is facing murder charges in Renton, Washington, after police allege he fatally shot a 17-year-old boy in a Big 5 Sporting Goods parking lot on June 5. The tragic incident occurred as the boy and his friends were attempting to return an airsoft gun to the store.
Suspect identified as Off-duty Police Officer
The suspect, identified as Aaron Brown Myers, is an off-duty police officer. According to a press release from the Renton Police Department, the altercation took place around 7:30 p.m. when Myers approached the three teenagers in the parking lot. A physical altercation ensued, leading to Myers allegedly shooting the 17-year-old victim multiple times.
Charges Filed Against Myers
Myers has been charged with second-degree murder with a firearm enhancement and second-degree assault with a firearm enhancement. He is currently being held in the King County Jail on a $2 million bail. The charging document reveals that Myers claimed he was in the area to provide “overwatch” due to an increase in crimes in the parking lot. He allegedly believed the teens were planning a violent robbery.
Surveillance Footage Supports Teens’ Account
Investigators obtained surveillance footage from the sporting goods store and a nearby martial arts studio. The footage reportedly shows one of the teenagers placing the airsoft gun on the ground after Myers approached them with a firearm. Despite the teens’ protests that it was not a real gun but a BB gun, Myers allegedly shot the victim multiple times.
Victim Identified as Local High School Student
The victim was identified as Hazrat Ali Rohani, a local high school student. His cause of death was determined to be multiple gunshot wounds, with at least seven shots hitting him, six of which entered through his back.
Community Mourns Teenager’s Tragic Death
The school principal confirmed Rohani’s death in an email to families, expressing condolences to his friends and family during this difficult time. It remains unclear if Myers has retained legal representation to speak on his behalf.
