A 33-year-old man from New Jersey has been apprehended for allegedly trying to sexually assault and murder a child under the age of 13 in Fairview. The suspect, Julio Amaro-Vasquez, is currently detained in the Bergen County Jail as he awaits his court appearance in Hackensack.
Authorities disclosed on Tuesday that an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Fairview Police Department revealed that Amaro-Vasquez purportedly strangled the child to the point of losing consciousness before attempting to sexually assault the victim.
Furthermore, a second individual, identified as 30-year-old Marlin Cervantes-Santos, has also been taken into custody for allegedly instructing two children to provide false information to investigators. Prosecutors indicated that Cervantes-Santos was in a romantic relationship with Amaro-Vasquez.
The exact nature of the relationship between the defendant and the child in question remains unclear. Amaro-Vasquez is facing a slew of charges, including second-degree aggravated assault, third-degree attempted sexual assault by contact, and third-degree endangerment of a child’s welfare.
