A tragic incident occurred when a 20-year-old fisherman met his untimely death after disappearing in a South Carolina creek, as reported by officials.
The young man was enjoying a fishing session on Long Branch Creek when he decided to “jump into the water to cool off,” according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
Despite the efforts of bystanders to rescue him, the strong current swept the man away, leading to a desperate search operation by deputies.
Authorities were alerted to the situation at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, with the disappearance occurring near Savannah Highway, which was temporarily closed for the search but later reopened.
Utilizing advanced technology such as drones and sonar, search crews were able to locate the missing fisherman several hours later. Divers recovered his lifeless body from the water, confirming the tragic outcome.
The deceased has been identified as Angel Gabriel Martin Vasquez from Guatemala. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office determined that he succumbed to “asphyxia due to drowning,” as stated in a news release on June 10.
