The Delaware State Police have provided an update on a recent incident that took place at Christiana Hospital in Newark, leading to the arrest of 36-year-old Larry Kelley from Newport, Delaware. Kelley has been charged with felony assault and other offences related to a stolen vehicle hit-and-run crash that occurred on Saturday morning.

Details of the Incident

On the morning of June 8, 2024, at approximately 8:12 a.m., troopers responded to a report at Christiana Hospital, located at 4755 Ogletown Stanton Road in Newark. The report indicated that a male patient had fled from the hospital in a stolen vehicle following a hit-and-run crash.

Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement officials discovered that the suspect, Larry Kelley, had been a patient in the hospital’s Emergency Department. Kelley reportedly became increasingly aggressive and made a run for it, evading capture by hospital constables. He then proceeded to enter an unoccupied SUV that was idling in front of the Emergency Department’s entrance. In his attempt to escape, Kelley struck a constable with the stolen vehicle and drove over him as he fled the scene towards Churchmans Road. The injured constable was subsequently treated for serious injuries at the hospital.

After abandoning the stolen SUV in the area of East Newport Pike and Forest Drive, Kelley attempted to flee on foot. However, thanks to the collaborative efforts of troopers and officers from the Newport Police Department, Kelley was located trying to enter a property on Maple Hill Road. He was apprehended without any further incident.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

Following his medical clearance from the hospital, it was revealed through a computer inquiry that Kelley did not possess a valid driver’s license. As a result, he was transported to Troop 2 to face a series of charges, including Assault 2nd Degree, Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Theft Under £1,500, Resisting Arrest, Criminal Trespass, and Driving Without a Valid License.

Subsequently, Kelley was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and remanded to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on an £11,500 cash bond, in addition to facing several traffic violations.

Delaware State Police are continuing their investigation into the incident and are urging anyone with additional information to come forward. The safety and security of the community remain a top priority for law enforcement officials.
