Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Authorities in Taipei, Taiwan are currently conducting an investigation into how a suspected former Chinese naval officer managed to sail a small boat into a strategic river mouth that leads to the capital of the self-governing island republic.

The small boat was initially detected off the coast, but it was only intercepted when it started causing disruptions to ferry traffic across the Tamsui River. This river originates from the mountains of inner Taiwan and flows into the 160-kilometer-wide Taiwan Strait, which serves as the boundary between Taiwan and China following their separation during a civil war in 1949.

The individual piloting the boat has been identified as a 60-year-old retired officer from China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy, with the surname Ruan. This revelation has raised concerns over whether the incident was a deliberate attempt to test Taiwan’s surveillance and defense capabilities in the face of increasing threats from China, which seeks to assert its claim over the island.

Given the challenging conditions in the Taiwan Strait, which is known for its strong winds and tides, speculation has arisen as to whether the small boat managed to navigate the waters independently from the Chinese coast or if it was launched from a larger vessel acting as a support base.

While transportation links have been gradually reestablished between Taiwan and China over the past two decades, the Chinese Communist Party imposes strict regulations on the travel of both active and retired officials, restricting their movements across the strait.
