The incident occurred on June 2 in Sulphur Plaza, where 64-year-old Elsa Davila was grocery shopping. Davila spotted a man with a dog asking for financial help and decided to offer him some money. However, things took a horrific turn when the dog broke free from its leash and launched a brutal assault on Davila.
Davila was swiftly taken to a hospital in New Orleans, where her daughters witnessed the devastating aftermath of the attack. The 64-year-old sustained severe injuries to her face and stomach, leading to the establishment of a GoFundMe page to support her recovery journey. Describing the harrowing sight, Savanna Gonzales, one of Davila’s daughters, expressed her shock at seeing her mother with a facial wound caused by the dog attack.
The victim underwent plastic surgery to address her injuries and is currently on a liquid diet, unable to speak. She communicates with nurses by writing or texting due to the restrictions on her vocal capabilities. The man responsible for the dog, identified as 37-year-old Kyle Smith, is now facing charges including trespassing, cruelty to animals, and unlawful ownership of a dangerous dog.
Michelle Garcia, another of Davila’s daughters who works at a nearby store, revealed previous issues with the dog’s behaviour, prompting them to relocate it from the premises. The dog, described as a pit bull-mix, is now in the custody of Sulphur Animal Control following the attack.
Despite the traumatic experience, Davila’s daughters emphasise their mother’s resilience and positive attitude towards her recovery. They acknowledge her fear and anxiety following the incident, with Davila experiencing nightmares about being chased by a dog.
