Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Taiwanese authorities are currently conducting an investigation into an incident involving an alleged former Chinese naval officer who sailed a small boat into a strategic river mouth that leads to the capital of the self-governing island republic.

The small boat was initially detected off the coast but was not intercepted until it began causing disruptions to ferry traffic across the Tamsui River. The river flows from the mountains of inner Taiwan into the Taiwan Strait, a 160-kilometer-wide body of water that separates Taiwan and China.

According to reports from the official Central News Agency, the pilot of the boat has been identified as a 60-year-old former officer in China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy with the surname Ruan. This has raised concerns regarding the possibility that the voyage was intended to test Taiwan’s detection and defense capabilities in response to increasing Chinese threats towards the island, which China claims as its own territory.

The Taiwan Strait serves as a crucial transit point for global commerce but is also known for its challenging winds and tides. There is speculation surrounding how the small boat managed to reach the river mouth, with questions arising as to whether it travelled independently from the Chinese coast or was launched from a larger vessel.

While transportation links between Taiwan and China have been gradually restored over the past two decades, the ruling Communist Party of China maintains strict restrictions on the travel movements of serving and retired officials.
