A couple hailing from Bihar and residing in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district have been apprehended by the authorities for their alleged involvement in a shocking case of infant trafficking. The suspects, identified as Mahesh Kumar and Anjali, were taken into custody after it was reported that they had sold a newborn baby for a staggering sum of Rs 2.50 lakh to a local farmer.
As per the details provided by the police, Mahesh and Anjali were operating an eatery in Appanayakanpatti, Sulur, when child rights officials received a tip-off regarding their illicit activities. Subsequently, a thorough investigation was launched to ascertain the veracity of the claims against the accused duo.
Upon filing a formal complaint with the Karumathampatti Police, the authorities swiftly arrested Mahesh and Anjali on June 3. It was during the interrogation that the shocking revelation came to light – the couple had not only sold off a 15-day-old baby to the aforementioned farmer but had also engaged in a similar transaction involving a baby girl with a couple in Andhra Pradesh just a month prior.
Further probing into the matter led to the detention of Anjali’s mother, Poonamdevi, and her sister, Megakumari, who were brought in for questioning from Bihar. It was established that the infants were being procured from Bihar and then sold off for a hefty sum of Rs 2.50 lakh each.
Subsequently, on June 7, Anjali’s mother, her sister, and the buyer, Vijayan, were all taken into custody by the authorities. The Investigation Officer revealed that two separate cases had been registered against the accused individuals, leading to the arrest of a total of five people, including the Bihar couple.
“Further investigations are underway to determine if any other individuals are involved in this despicable crime. The baby boy rescued is just two days old, while the infant girl is approximately one month old,” the officer disclosed.
