SALISBURY — A man has been apprehended on charges of choking a woman and forcibly preventing her from leaving their residence, according to authorities.

The investigation was initiated after the victim drove to the Mooresville Police Department to report the incident, where she was directed to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office as the alleged assault occurred within the county, stated Chief Deputy Jason Owens.

The victim sought medical attention outside the county for her injuries, which were found to be consistent with her account, including signs of strangulation, Owens added.

The suspect, identified as 56-year-old Terry Eugene Martin Jr., was arrested and charged with felony assault involving strangulation, felony assault causing serious bodily harm, misdemeanor domestic violence, misdemeanor assault on a female, misdemeanor threats, and misdemeanor false imprisonment.

According to Owens, the altercation began over a bag breaking when change was being collected for a purchase. This led to an argument, during which Martin allegedly attacked the victim, ultimately strangling her. Despite managing to escape at one point, the victim was forcibly pulled back inside by Martin.

Martin is currently detained at the Rowan County Detention Center without bond, given the domestic nature of the charges.
