A man who was detained in connection with a violent altercation that took place on May 31 in Pontiac has been officially named as Demarkius Travonia Jones. Jones, a 28-year-old resident of Pontiac, faces multiple charges including two counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of felony firearm possession, and one count of firearms possession by a prohibited person.
The incident occurred at the Huron Plaza located at 704 W. Huron, where two individuals, both aged 23, sustained injuries as a result of the shootout. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office was swift in their response and apprehended the suspect, leading to his identification and subsequent charges.
Sheriff Michael Bouchard commended the efforts of his team in swiftly locating and apprehending the perpetrator, as well as building a strong case for his prosecution. “I applaud the great work of our team to not only quickly track down and apprehend the perpetrator, but to put together a case so he may be held fully accountable,” said Sheriff Bouchard.
During a court hearing at the 50th District Court, Judge Ronda Gross ordered Jones to be held without bond, with a return court date yet to be scheduled. The incident, which took place at 11 p.m. on May 31, saw police responding to reports of gunfire at the Huron Plaza.
Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered bullet holes on the building façade and shell casings on the street. Inside the premises, a 23-year-old Pontiac resident was found with a minor gunshot wound on his back, holding an AR-style rifle. He was admitted to the hospital in stable condition.
Another 23-year-old individual from Pontiac was located in a room with a severe back injury, and he is currently in critical condition at the hospital. Authorities also recovered shell casings and a loaded AR-style magazine within the building, along with a significant quantity of marijuana, packaging materials, and a scale.
It was revealed that the building had been used as an after-hours meeting spot, with drug paraphernalia scattered around. Additionally, several vehicles in the parking lot sustained damage from stray bullets during the altercation.
