Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Organised Crime Squad investigators have unearthed a buried truck as part of their probe into the tragic death of a Brazilian diver in Newcastle. The incident, which took place on Monday 9 May 2022 at the Port of Newcastle, saw emergency services responding to a distress call regarding an unresponsive male diver found in the water alongside 54kg of cocaine.

Despite the valiant efforts of witnesses and paramedics, the man, later identified as 31-year-old Brazilian national Bruno Borges Martins, could not be revived. The search for a second diver, 32-year-old Jhoni Fernandes Da Silva, still continues as local authorities took charge of the investigation before transferring it to the State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Squad under Strike Force Groove.

Assisted by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), Australian Border Force (ABF), Northern Territory Police (NTPOL), and Queensland Police Service (QPS), detectives have made significant progress in the case, resulting in the arrest and charging of two individuals currently facing legal proceedings.

Following an extensive inquiry, including a public appeal for information on the two-year anniversary of the incident, on Tuesday 28 May 2024, investigators executed a search warrant at a property in Menangle. It was during this operation that a white Mitsubishi Fuso truck, believed to have been used by those involved in the drug-related incident, was discovered.

Authorities suspect that the truck was last seen heading southbound on the M4 Motorway at Pennant Hills around 6:30 pm on Sunday 8 May 2022. Detectives are now urging the public to come forward with any information regarding a Toyota Townace Van with the NSW registration WNY439, which was spotted travelling alongside the truck.

The investigation under Strike Force Groove is ongoing, with law enforcement requesting anyone with relevant information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or visit https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au for anonymous reporting.
