Accident – Death – Obituary News :

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – The Rev. Rob Cole of St. John the Apostle Church in Virginia Beach is currently navigating a crucial decision as he faces allegations of sexual abuse within the parish. The Diocese of Richmond has initiated an investigation into claims made against a now-deceased parent at the parish school, prompting Rev. Cole to either resign as pastor or take leave while challenging his removal. This decision deadline looms until Wednesday.

The Diocese took action last month, placing Rev. Cole on temporary leave after a parish parent came forward with allegations of sexual abuse against another parishioner involving her daughter. The parent, Meredith Hatchell, reported to WAVY that she had alerted school officials in early May about the alleged molestation of her daughter by a parent, later identified as Vincent Jakawich. She also informed the Virginia Beach Police Department of the incident.

Hatchell disclosed that her 12-year-old daughter revealed on May 8 that a neighbour, identified as 45-year-old Jakawich, had allegedly sexually abused her when she was seven years old. Tragically, there were indications that Jakawich took his own life in Currituck County, North Carolina, shortly after the allegations surfaced.

In a statement released in May, the diocese confirmed that during its investigation, Rev. Cole had been placed on temporary leave, and St. John the Apostle Principal Mariam Cotton had opted to retire.

After a meeting on June 7 between Rev. Cole and Bishop of Richmond Barry Knestout, the SJA men’s rosary group, Sword of Truth, outlined in a letter to members the options that Rev. Cole must consider. He could resign and be assigned a new role in the diocese, with the specific assignment yet to be determined by the bishop. Alternatively, he could choose to contest the case under church law, necessitating his departure from the parish without financial support.

Parishioners have voiced their support for Rev. Cole, who has served as the parish pastor for approximately 15 years. Jerry Donnelly, a parishioner, shared his surprise at the situation, highlighting Rev. Cole’s approachability and friendliness both within and outside the church.

Paul Kenney, another parishioner, expressed the profound impact of the allegations on the parish community, stating that they are “devastated beyond words.”
