Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Syracuse, N.Y. – A 21-year-old man was convicted on Monday for the murder of 11-year-old Brexialee Torres-Ortiz after a swift jury deliberation last Friday.

Dahviere Griswold, a resident of Syracuse, was found guilty on all charges, including second-degree murder and attempted murder.

The jury reached the verdict around 4 p.m. following two days of deliberations. The trial commenced on June 6.

Griswold was one of three individuals charged in the killing of Brexialee, affectionately known as Brexi to her loved ones, and the attempted murder of 19-year-old Isael Cruz, the intended target of the shooting on January 16, 2023, in the 400 block of Oakwood Avenue.

The jury determined that the circumstantial evidence was sufficient to convict the accused.

The tragic shooting of the young girl sent shockwaves through the Syracuse community and garnered national attention.

The sixth-grader had ventured to a nearby corner store that fateful night to purchase a gallon of milk to prepare mac and cheese with her grandmother before her mother returned home.

Evidence presented during the trial revealed a group driving a stolen Nissan Armada on the evening of the shooting, circling the neighbourhood.

“They were seeking someone to target,” stated Prosecutor Rob Moran in his opening statement.

A video capturing the crime depicted the vehicle parking across the street from a parking lot adjacent to Brexi’s residence, where Isael Cruz was socialising with friends.

At the moment the car parked, Brexi was inside a nearby store purchasing the milk.

As Brexi made her way back home, three individuals exited the stolen SUV and opened fire at Cruz. They hit Cruz in the leg and fatally wounded Brexi twice in the torso as she attempted to flee to safety. She succumbed to her injuries at Upstate University Hospital.

During deliberations, the jury requested to review every video capturing three individuals entering and exiting the car, including the footage of the shooting. None of the individuals in the clips could be definitively identified.

Griswold’s co-defendants, Deckyse Bridges, 16, and Rasean Patterson, 18, accepted a plea deal offered by Judge Ted Limpert and pleaded guilty. The judge assured them a sentence of 25 years to life in exchange for their guilty pleas.
