Accident – Death – Obituary News :

In a shocking turn of events, a 41-year-old man from Stevens Point has been found not guilty by reason of mental disease for shooting at police officers back in April 2023. Nicholas E. Meyer was shot once in the abdomen during a standoff with police on April 7, 2023. The Portage County Circuit Judge Michael Zell made the ruling and ordered Meyer to be committed to a secure mental health facility for 20 years.

The incident unfolded when officers responded to a call about a suspicious person outside a home in the 900 block of Fifth Avenue in Stevens Point. Upon arrival, they encountered Meyer outside a different home nearby, carrying what appeared to be a rifle case. Despite repeated requests to come out of the garage, Meyer proceeded to fire multiple shots towards the officers, prompting them to return fire.

Eventually, Meyer surrendered and was taken to Aspirus Wausau Hospital to receive treatment for his gunshot wound. This incident highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement officers in dealing with individuals who may be struggling with mental health issues.
