A driver has been charged in a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a 32-year-old woman in Canton Township, Michigan.
The fatal crash occurred at 12:20 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Lilley Road in Canton Township.
According to officials, Desiree Jones, a 32-year-old resident of Belleville, was driving a white Chevrolet Malibu westbound on Michigan Avenue when her vehicle was struck head-on by a red GMC Acadia.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Jones was pronounced dead as a result of the injuries sustained in the collision.
The driver of the GMC Acadia was identified as 37-year-old Maurice Griffin from Ypsilanti. Griffin was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital following the incident.
Charges Against Griffin
Maurice Griffin was arraigned at the 36th District Court on the following charges:
- Second-degree murder – a felony carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
- Operating with a high blood-alcohol content causing death with a prior conviction – a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
- Reckless driving causing death – a felony with a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.
- Operating with a suspended, revoked, or denied license causing death – a felony with a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.
- Operating while intoxicated, third offense – a felony with a penalty of 1-5 years in prison.
Griffin was granted a $1 million cash bond in relation to the charges brought against him.
A probable cause conference is set to take place on June 21 at the 35th District Court, with a preliminary examination scheduled for June 28.
