Virginia State Police (VSP) have officially named the man who was fatally shot by police during an incident in Roanoke on June 9. The individual has been identified as 41-year-old Travis Taurean Martin, a resident of Roanoke.

Details of the Incident

According to reports, the events leading up to the shooting began when Martin allegedly drove past the Roanoke Police Department (RPD) and made threatening remarks towards officers stationed outside. Subsequently, Martin reportedly called 911 and issued threats to “kill all Roanoke City Police Officers.” He later proceeded to make additional threats to dispatchers at the City of Roanoke E-911 Center.

Following these incidents, law enforcement officers obtained warrants for Threats Over Public Airways and commenced a search for Martin. At approximately 11:40 a.m., authorities were informed that Martin had damaged a Roanoke police vehicle, prompting the issuance of a warrant for property damage.

Officers eventually located Martin in the Valley View area around 1:30 p.m. He was observed at a business establishment, at which point officers began tailing him. The pursuit culminated in a traffic stop in the 2900 block of Hershberger Road NW, near the intersection of Ferncliff Avenue NW.

Confrontation and Fatal Shooting

Upon exiting his vehicle, Martin allegedly brandished an axe and advanced towards the officers. He proceeded to strike one occupied patrol vehicle multiple times before moving towards another officer. In response to the imminent threat, two officers discharged their firearms, resulting in Martin sustaining gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention from Roanoke EMS personnel, Martin succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the hospital.

Fortunately, no law enforcement officers sustained injuries during the altercation. The weapon allegedly wielded by Martin was recovered at the scene by investigators.

Ongoing Investigation

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are currently being investigated by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Salem Division, a division of VSP. Once the inquiry is concluded, the findings will be forwarded to the Roanoke Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for further scrutiny.
