Virginia State Police have revealed the identity of the man who was fatally shot by Roanoke Police on Saturday. Travis Tauren Martin, a 41-year-old resident of Roanoke, was the individual involved in the tragic incident that unfolded on the 2900 block of Hershberger Road NW.

According to State Police reports, the confrontation occurred when Roanoke officers conducted a routine traffic stop involving Martin. Upon exiting his vehicle, Martin brandished a weapon and proceeded to advance towards the officers. The authorities were forced to take action, resulting in Martin being shot. The weapon in question was later recovered at the scene by investigators.

In response to the incident, Virginia State Police have taken over the investigation at the request of The Roanoke City Police Department. Once the investigation has been concluded, the findings will be handed over to the Roanoke Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for further review.

The sequence of events leading up to the fatal encounter began when Roanoke Police responded to reports of a man shouting threats at officers outside the Roanoke Police Department in the early hours of the morning. The same individual also made a distressing 911 call, threatening harm to all Roanoke Police officers. Subsequently, Roanoke Police obtained warrants for Threats Over Public Airways and launched a search for the suspect, later identified as Martin.

Following an incident where Martin allegedly damaged an officer’s vehicle in a neighbouring jurisdiction, officers obtained a warrant for Property Damage and continued their search for Martin. The suspect was eventually located at a business in the Valley View area, prompting officers to tail him.

The encounter culminated in a traffic stop on the 2900 block of Hershberger Road, where Martin came to a halt in the turning lane at the intersection of Hershberger Road and Ferncliff Avenue. It was at this point that Martin, armed with what appeared to be an axe or hatchet, began striking a patrol car before advancing menacingly towards the officers, resulting in the fatal shots being fired.

Tragically, Martin was pronounced dead at the scene by Roanoke Fire-EMS. Fortunately, the officers involved in the incident emerged unscathed and have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department protocol.
