City officials in Springfield have announced plans for two additional sessions next month to gather public input on proposed zoning code updates. The locations and times for these sessions, scheduled for July 13 and 14, will be announced closer to the dates.

The review and revision of zoning provisions, which have not been addressed since 2001, were launched by city officials. With 78% of the city currently zoned for single-family residences, any changes to the zoning laws will have a significant impact on the majority of citizens.

Meetings have already been held with two neighborhood associations, and more are scheduled to ensure that residents have a voice in the process. City zoning staffers Cheyenne Shuttleworth and Vaidehe Agwan recently shared feedback from sessions with the West End Neighborhood Association and South Fountain Neighborhood Association at a Springfield City Commissioners meeting. They noted that new ideas and perspectives have emerged from these conversations with city residents.

For example, residents in the North Belmont Avenue area between East Main and McCreight have raised concerns about current zoning regulations that prohibit small-scale neighborhood businesses. Many residents have expressed support for zoning changes that would allow for businesses like neighborhood grocery stores, hair salons, and flower shops to operate in the area.

While there is support for combining certain designated districts to allow for more duplex housing, most participants have opposed expanding zoning to permit triplex or more individual units in existing single-family residential areas.

Proposals to allow the use of mobile homes or shipping containers as residences have been deemed less appropriate for neighborhood living. However, there is some openness to the idea of tiny house construction, as long as the structures are in harmony with the existing neighborhood aesthetic.

To ensure that the community is aware of upcoming public meetings, the city will be making announcements on social media, in newspapers, and through flyers posted in public spaces such as libraries and neighborhood businesses. This outreach is designed to encourage more citizens to participate in the discussions and have their voices heard.
