QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (KTVK/KPHO/Gray News) – A devastating incident has left a community in mourning as a 4-year-old girl from Arizona tragically passed away in her parents’ arms at the hospital, just a day after sustaining critical injuries in a car crash involving an alleged drunken driver.
Lily Moster, described as a ray of sunshine, has left a profound impact on those who knew her. Her sudden and untimely death in a multi-vehicle collision has created a void that will be felt by many, as reported by Arizona’s Family.
Speaking about Lily, her grandfather, Dan Smith, fondly remembers her as a cherished member of the family. He expressed the deep struggle the family is facing in coming to terms with the loss of the young girl.
Smith shared, “She’s a treasure to the family. She’s just a sweet little spitfire. Dad feels guilt for no reason at all. It’s not his blame, but they’re struggling. Just slowly settling in when Momma comes home from the hospital the first time and Lily’s not there, that was a heartbreaking moment.”
The tragic incident unfolded as Lily’s father, Daniel Moster, was driving her and her 6-year-old brother, Luke, back home from swim lessons on a fateful Wednesday. The children were safely secured in their car seats in the back of the vehicle.
Reports from Queen Creek authorities indicate that Moster had come to a stop at a sign around 11:30 a.m. when their minivan was violently rear-ended by an individual driving a black Jeep Wrangler at a speed of nearly 60 miles per hour. Footage from the scene revealed extensive damage to the rear of the minivan.
Recalling the harrowing moments, Smith shared, “Dad says that he was initially dizzy and disoriented. When he recognized his surroundings, he quickly went to get the kids out of the car. A passerby actually got to the kids first, cut seatbelts and got Lily’s brother out. Lily was unconscious.”
While Lily’s brother and father escaped serious injuries, the young girl was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. Tragically, she passed away on Thursday night while cradled in her parents’ embrace.
Smith reflected on the poignant moment, stating, “It was the sweetest thing. They removed all the equipment, so Mom and Dad could really hold her like a baby. They wept and hugged her when she passed.”
Highlighting the close bond between Lily and her brother, Smith mentioned, “They were very close. She idolized her brother. When her brother’s favorite color became red, suddenly, her favorite color was red.”
Grateful for the assistance of strangers at the scene, the Moster family has set up a GoFundMe to aid with Lily’s medical expenses and now, funeral arrangements.
Smith concluded, “She’s going to be sorely missed, but she’ll live with us in our hearts. They’re really clinging to Luke because he’s what they have left.”
Following investigations, the driver of the Jeep Wrangler has been identified as 33-year-old Jason Sanchez. Authorities revealed that he made no attempt to brake before the collision and was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.111, which exceeds the legal limit by nearly 1.5 times.
Court documents indicate that Sanchez confessed to consuming three or four beers at San Tan Mountain Casino prior to the incident.
Sanchez was taken into custody on the day of the crash and faces charges of aggravated assault and driving under the influence. With Lily’s tragic passing, he now also stands accused of second-degree murder.
Sanchez’s bond has been set at £100,000.
