The Uganda Electrical Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) attributes tragic deaths to wedding reception organizers

The Uganda Electrical Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has attributed the deaths of six individuals who were electrocuted last Thursday in Butawaata Village, Kigando Sub-county, Mubende District to the organizers of a wedding reception. The incident occurred when tents were erected near high voltage lines, causing a fatal accident.

UEDCL Warns Against Operating Near High Voltage Lines

Mr. Jonan Kiiza, the UEDCL public relations officer, emphasized the importance of avoiding any activities near high power voltage lines. He stated that such operations put human life at risk and urged the public to adhere to safety guidelines around electricity installations.

Tragic Incident at Butawata Market Grounds

The tragic incident took place at Butawata Market grounds around 9 am, leading to the abrupt cancellation of the wedding reception. The victims, identified as Godwin Asaba Bidewa, Boaz Byamukama, Jordan Ayebazibwe, George Walusimbi, Ambrose Kakuru, and Innocent Nasasira, all residents of Mubende, lost their lives in the accident.

Groom Rushed to Hospital

Mr. Nelson Otamugaya, the groom and former teacher at Kigando Seed Secondary School, collapsed during the incident and was immediately rushed to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention.

Police Investigation and Negligence Concerns

Police spokesperson Ms. Racheal Kawala stated that a case of rush and neglect act causing death has been opened, with investigations underway. The police were not informed about the event, and there are concerns about neglect and poor installation of electricity lines in the area.

Community Response and Previous Incidents

Kigando Sub-county chairperson, Mr. Eron Muzoora, highlighted the need for awareness on the dangers of illegal power connections and sagging power lines following the incident. This tragedy marks the second such incident in the area, with a previous fatality due to electrocution during construction.

Grieving Families and Burial Arrangements

Ms. Grace Kiconco, the mother of Innocent Nasasira, expressed profound grief over losing all her children, with Innocent being the latest victim. The victims were laid to rest on Friday and Saturday, according to police reports.
