North Aurora Man Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison for Attacking Autistic Boy on School Bus

A North Aurora man, Matthew R. Enck, has been handed a six-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to a shocking attack on a 14-year-old boy with autism during a school bus ride in 2021. The incident, which left the student unconscious, occurred on the bus ride back from Camelot Northwest Center for Autism in Genoa.

Enck, who was working as a school bus aid at the time, faced charges of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm through strangulation, strangulation, causing great bodily harm to a child with profound intellectual disabilities, and causing bodily harm in a public way.

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Rick Amato expressed his shock and dismay at the incident, stating, “I could not imagine the agony the parents of this child felt looking on while their child was completely unresponsive because of being absolutely smothered by the defendant.”

Enck, who pleaded guilty on March 4, was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Marcy Buick to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Details of the Attack

The incident took place on a school bus where the 14-year-old boy, who was wearing a five-point chest harness and seat belt, was targeted by Enck after throwing his shoe at the bus driver. Enck responded aggressively, squishing the boy with his body and causing him to lose consciousness.

According to court records, Enck remained pressed against the boy for about eight minutes before the boy slumped towards the center aisle and remained unconscious for over half an hour. Paramedics were called to the scene, and the boy was taken to Rush University Medical Center in Chicago for treatment.

Legal Proceedings and Sentence

Enck, who was represented by defense attorney Kristopher Piereth, faced a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison but was ultimately sentenced to six years. He will need to serve at least 50% of his sentence and one year of probation upon release.

The boy sustained bruising and abrasions to his neck, chest, and upper torso as a result of the attack, which was described as an “aggressive physical restraint” in court records.
