In a devastating turn of events, Robbie Cornelius, a 40-year-old man from Marietta, lost his life after falling off a tube and drowning in Lake Allatoona on Sunday afternoon. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division reported that multiple agencies were called to the scene of a boating incident near Little River Marina shortly before 2:30 p.m.
Boating Mishap Leads to Tragic Outcome
According to officials, a group on a rental boat was enjoying a day out on the lake when Cornelius fell off the tube he was riding. Unfortunately, he was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident. Immediately after falling into the water, Cornelius complained of leg pain, prompting several individuals to jump in and try to rescue him. However, the situation took a turn for the worse when Cornelius began to pull them under, forcing them to abandon the rescue attempt.
Search and Recovery Efforts
Game Wardens and Cherokee County Fire initiated a search operation using side scan SONAR technology to locate Cornelius in the vast waters of Lake Allatoona. After several hours of searching, Cornelius was finally found in 16 feet of water around 5 p.m. Despite the valiant efforts of the rescue teams, it was too late to save his life.
