In a tragic incident in Hisar, a married woman named Mamta, aged 25 and a resident of Niyana village, allegedly took her own life due to relentless harassment over dowry demands by her husband and in-laws. The victim’s husband, Dharambir, mother-in-law Bala, two brothers-in-law Bindra and Balindr, and two sisters-in-law are currently facing charges under Section 304-B (dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code.
The case came to light when Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Ramgarh village in Jind district, lodged a complaint with the police. According to the complainant, Dharambir had threatened to harm Mamta if she was not taken away from their home. Tragically, on June 8, Bindra informed Ramesh that Mamta had consumed poison.
The incident has once again shed light on the persistent issue of dowry harassment and violence against women in India. It is a stark reminder of the urgent need for effective implementation of laws and measures to protect women from such heinous crimes.
