LAKE CITY, Fla. – A man has been taken into custody and charged with attempted homicide following a shooting incident that led to an extended standoff on Saturday night, as reported by the Lake City Police Department.
Authorities were alerted to the shooting at a residence on NW Wilson Street around 8 p.m. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered a victim with a gunshot wound to the stomach. Emergency medical services quickly attended to the injured individual before transporting them to a nearby trauma center for further treatment.
While attending to the first victim and conducting preliminary investigations, officers uncovered a second individual who had also sustained gunshot wounds.
Upon learning that the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Brooks Samuel Smith, was barricaded inside the property, law enforcement established a secure perimeter and enlisted the assistance of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team.
After the SWAT team arrived on the scene, a trained negotiator initiated communication with Smith, who was refusing to surrender. Despite Smith firing shots from within the residence, the officers and deputies maintained their professionalism and composure throughout the tense situation.
Following a five-hour standoff, law enforcement successfully apprehended Smith without further incident. He was subsequently taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation before being booked into the Columbia County Detention Center.
Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter commended the bravery and dedication displayed by the law enforcement personnel involved in resolving the dangerous situation. He expressed solidarity with the victims as they receive medical care and support during this challenging period.
Smith now faces two charges of attempted homicide as the investigation into the incident continues.
