(CNN) — Experts in water safety have highlighted the significance of the color of a child’s swimsuit in ensuring their safety in swimming pools and at the beach. The visibility of a child underwater can be greatly influenced by the hue of their swimwear, making it easier for lifeguards and parents to spot them quickly in emergency situations.

Bernard Fisher, director of health and safety for the American Lifeguard Association, emphasised the impact of swimsuit color on visibility, stating that bright and contrasting colors are essential for quick identification in the water. He recommended neon yellow, orange, pink, and bright red as ideal colors for swimwear, as they stand out both underwater and on the surface.

Wyatt Werneth, a coastal lifeguard in Florida, highlighted the importance of bright swimsuit colors in enhancing visibility, especially in cases of missing children. He noted that bright colors can assist lifeguards in locating children in pool environments or at the beach, thereby preventing drowning incidents and missing persons cases.

Swimsuit Color Test Results

Alive Solutions, a company specialising in water safety, conducted experiments to determine the visibility of swimsuit colors in swimming pools and open water environments such as lakes. The tests revealed that neon colors such as pink, orange, and yellow were the most visible against different water backgrounds.

Natalie Livingston, co-founder of Alive Solutions, explained that the color of a swimsuit can significantly impact visibility in water due to factors such as surface agitation and glare. Bright neon colors were found to be the most visible in swimming pools and lakes, while light colors such as white and light blue tended to blend in with the environment.

Overall, neon colors were identified as the most effective for enhancing visibility in all water environments, making them a crucial factor in ensuring the safety of children in and around water.

Layers of Water Safety

While bright swimsuit colors can aid in making children more visible in the water during emergencies, Dr. Maneesha Agarwal, an associate professor of pediatrics and emergency medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, emphasised the importance of multiple layers of water safety.

Aside from swimsuit color, Dr. Agarwal highlighted the significance of water competency, supervision, and knowledge of drowning signs in preventing water-related incidents. She advised parents to ensure appropriate supervision, water-competency training, and preparedness for emergencies such as CPR and rapid response measures.

Recent data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicated a rise in accidental drowning rates in the United States, with children aged 1-4 being at high risk. Participation in formal swimming lessons was identified as a key factor in reducing the risk of drowning in young children, further emphasising the importance of water safety measures.

Chris DeJong, founder of Big Blue Swim School, stressed the significance of swim lessons as a critical tool in water safety for children. He recommended starting swim lessons at an early age to build water competency and familiarity with emergency procedures, underscoring the role of swim lessons in preventing drowning incidents.

Adhering to water safety protocols, including bright swimsuit colors and swim lessons, can significantly enhance the safety of children in and around water, reducing the risk of drowning incidents and ensuring a secure aquatic environment.
