A man who attempted to steal a car at the Circle K gas station on Main St. in Broomfield was shot by the vehicle’s owner in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. and led to the arrest of the suspect, Michael Joseph Ramos.

Ramos was apprehended by the police and charged with aggravated motor vehicle theft, driving under restraint, and failure to provide information after an accident involving injury, serious injury, or death. He is currently being held in custody on a $10,000 bond.

Prior to the car theft, the owner of the stolen 2015 blue Honda Accord had noticed suspicious activity in a nearby parking lot. Feeling concerned about the safety of his vehicle, he decided to bring his firearm into the store with him. Upon returning to his car, the owner encountered Ramos near the hood of his vehicle. Ramos was seen with a concealed object in his waistband, prompting the car owner to take action.

The car owner drew his firearm and confronted Ramos as he attempted to enter the stolen vehicle. A confrontation ensued, leading to a gunshot being fired through the driver’s side door window. Subsequently, the stolen car was driven erratically through the parking lot, causing damage to property before fleeing the scene.

Authorities located the stolen vehicle and discovered significant damage, including bloodstains, airbag deployment, and a bullet hole in the driver’s side window. Ramos was found with a gunshot wound to his left forearm and was taken to Longs Peak Hospital for treatment.

During an interview with the police, Ramos admitted to taking drugs and making the impulsive decision to steal the vehicle. He also disclosed his criminal history, including a previous prison sentence for auto theft and his status as a registered sex offender.

Following his discharge from the hospital, Ramos was transferred to Boulder County Jail to await further legal proceedings. The car owner’s involvement in the incident and any potential charges against him remain undisclosed at this time.
