ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- The Odessa Police Department has taken a suspect into custody following a tragic incident that occurred on Friday morning. Benjamin Meece, a 37-year-old individual, has been charged with the offence of Fail to Stop and Render Aid in relation to the crash.

At approximately 9:35 a.m. on June 7, the Odessa Police Department and Odessa Fire Rescue were dispatched to the area of E University Boulevard and Oakwood Drive following reports of a serious collision. Upon investigation, it was determined that a Dodge Challenger, which was being test driven by Meece, was travelling eastbound on University Boulevard. Simultaneously, a Honda Accord was heading westbound on the same road and attempted to make a southward turn onto Oakwood Drive, resulting in a collision with the Dodge Challenger.

Authorities revealed that Meece did not offer any assistance at the scene and chose to flee on foot. However, he was apprehended by law enforcement shortly after. Tragically, the driver of the Honda Accord was pronounced deceased at the scene. Meece and a passenger in the Dodge Challenger, identified as 34-year-old Kenneth Salas, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Medical Center Hospital for treatment. The identity of the deceased individual will be disclosed pending positive identification.

Meece is currently under custody at MCH and will be transferred to the Ector County Law Enforcement Center upon his discharge from the hospital. The investigation into the incident is ongoing as authorities work to gather more information.
