MANVIR Basram, 23, of Surrey, Sahib Basra, 20, and Harkirat Jhutty, 23, all residents of Surrey, along with Keilon Francois, 20, from Ontario, have been formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with the tragic shooting death of Yuvraj Goyal in Surrey on June 7.
While early indications point towards a targeted attack, investigators are diligently working to uncover the motive behind the killing of Goyal, a valued member of the community with no prior encounters with law enforcement.
On the morning of June 7, at around 8:46 a.m., Surrey RCMP responded to reports of a shooting in the 900-block of 164 Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of 28-year-old Goyal at the scene.
Shortly after the shooting, authorities were alerted to a vehicle fire in the 18500-block of McMillan Road in Surrey. Thanks to the swift response of Surrey RCMP, Air 1, and the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT), all four suspects were apprehended and taken into custody.
According to Punjabi journalist Gurpreet Singh Sahota, Yuvraj (Yuvi) hailed from Ludhiana, Punjab, and was the only child of his parents, who had visited him just a few weeks ago. He arrived in Canada as an international student six years ago and was actively involved in various work and volunteer initiatives. His aspiration was to join the police force.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has assumed control of the case and is closely collaborating with Surrey RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Service, and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC (CFSEU-BC) to advance the investigation.
“We are grateful for the dedicated efforts of the Surrey RCMP, Air 1, and IERT, but our work is far from over,” said IHIT Sgt. Timothy Pierotti. “IHIT investigators remain committed to uncovering the motives behind Mr. Goyal’s tragic death.”
IHIT is urging anyone with information, especially those who were in the vicinity of the crime scenes during the specified time frames, to come forward. Due to the ongoing legal proceedings, IHIT has stated that they will not be available for further comments at this time.
