A man from Southern Arizona has tragically lost his life in a plane crash in Pinal County, as confirmed by officials from the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.

PCSO officials announced on their X (formerly Twitter) page that the victim, identified as 68-year-old James Galvin from Oro Valley, was the pilot of the aircraft that crashed near the peak of Picacho Peak. The crash was reported by a hiker at approximately 7:25 a.m. on June 8.

According to a tweet from PCSO, “The small aircraft was occupied by only the pilot, who was pronounced deceased at the site of the crash.”

The scene of the crash will be handed over to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for further investigation.

In a statement, NTSB officials mentioned that the plane went down under circumstances that are still unknown.

“An NTSB investigator is en route to the scene and is expected to arrive this evening. Upon arrival, the investigator will commence the process of documenting the scene and examining the aircraft. The aircraft will then be transported to a secure facility for further evaluation,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, FAA authorities have identified the aircraft as a single-engine Rans S-12XL Airaile.
