Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Imphal, 8th June: The situation in Manipur’s Jiribam district remains critical as fresh violence has broken out, leading to the evacuation of over 200 people from Meitei villages to safer locations.

Reports indicate that suspected militants set fire to houses in outlying villages such as Lamtai Khunou, Dibong Khunou, Nunkhal, and Begra, forcing residents to seek refuge at the Jiri Sports Complex relief camp.

An official confirmed that most of the displaced individuals are from villages located more than 30 km away from Jiribam town. In response to the escalating violence, additional security personnel have been deployed to the area to maintain peace and order.

Manipur Police Take Action

The Manipur police have issued orders for state police commando personnel stationed in Imphal Valley to immediately report to Jiribam for duty on Saturday. This proactive measure aims to strengthen security and prevent further incidents of violence in the region.

On Thursday evening, tensions rose following the tragic death of a 59-year-old man, Soibam Saratkumar Singh, allegedly at the hands of militants. Singh, who went missing after visiting his farm, was later found with fatal injuries inflicted by a sharp object.

Community Outrage and Protests

The news of Singh’s death sparked outrage among locals, leading to retaliatory actions such as setting fire to an abandoned structure. Additionally, residents staged a protest outside the Jiribam police station, demanding the return of licensed firearms confiscated during the recent elections.

Jiribam, known for its diverse ethnic composition encompassing Meiteis, Muslims, Nagas, Kukis, and non-Manipuris, has historically avoided the ethnic conflicts plaguing other parts of Manipur. However, recent incidents have raised concerns about the region’s stability and security.

The ongoing ethnic strife between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and hill-based Kukis has resulted in over 200 casualties and displaced thousands of individuals, underscoring the urgent need for peace-building efforts in Manipur.
