SANTA ROSA BEACH — Walton County beaches and waters have reopened to the public following two shark attacks that occurred on Friday afternoon.
Corey Dobridnia, the public information officer for the Walton County Sheriff\’s Office, stated that the South Walton Fire District has changed the beach flags from double-red to single-red and purple, indicating hazardous water conditions and possible dangerous marine life.
Dobridnia emphasized the importance of being vigilant while in the water, as Walton County Sheriff\’s Office and Florida Fish and Wildlife will be monitoring the shoreline.
There is currently no update on the medical conditions of the individuals who were injured in the shark attacks and taken to Ascension Sacred Heart in Pensacola and HCA Fort Walton-Destin on Friday.
The first shark attack took place near Founders Land in Watersound Beach at 1:20 p.m., where a 45-year-old woman sustained severe injuries, including the loss of her lower left arm. She was airlifted to HCA Fort Walton-Destin Hospital for treatment.
The second incident occurred at 2:56 p.m. near Sandy Shores Court in Seacrest Beach, with two teenage girls, aged 15 and 17, being attacked while swimming with friends inside the first sandbar.
One of the girls suffered severe injuries to her upper and lower extremities and was airlifted to Ascension Sacred Heart in Pensacola. The other girl sustained flesh wounds to her lower right extremity and was taken to Ascension Bay Medical Center in Panama City Beach, where she remains in stable condition.
