According to reports from Maine State Police, the tragic incident occurred while Lucy and her siblings were playing badminton in the front yard of a lake cottage. The unfortunate accident happened when an errant shaft of a badminton racquet struck Lucy, causing severe head trauma.

Heartbreaking Account of the Incident

Lucy’s father, Jesse Morgan, who serves as the pastor of worship and discipleship at Green Pond Bible Chapel in Newfoundland, New Jersey, shared a poignant account of the tragedy in a blog associated with the nondenominational institution.

Describing the moment of the accident, Jesse recounted how he and his wife were at the back of the cottage when they heard screams emanating from the front yard. They rushed to find Lucy in distress after the racquet mishap.

He detailed, “Due to a freak accident with a racquet that broke on a downward swing, a sharp piece had entered Lucy’s skull while she was sitting on the sideline and caused catastrophic injury. She was still breathing but unresponsive as I held her with [her mother] Bethany crying out to God.”

State police investigations revealed that the aluminum shaft of the badminton racquet had dislodged from the wooden handle, resulting in the fatal blow to Lucy’s head, causing the shaft to pierce through her skull.

Tragic Outcome and Grief-Stricken Family

Lucy was swiftly transported to MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Sanford before being airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland for specialized medical care. However, the severity of her injuries, including hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy, ultimately led to her passing on Wednesday.

Jesse Morgan expressed the profound impact of Lucy’s death on her mother and their three other children, highlighting the devastating loss experienced by the family. He shared, “Shiloh broke down immediately. She and Lucy are best friends being the middle girls.”

The tragedy tested Jesse’s faith, leading him to reflect on the outpouring of support and love shown by relatives, church members, and well-wishers during their time of grief. He noted that amidst the darkness of their loss, they found glimpses of God’s grace and benevolence.

Funeral Arrangements and Legacy of Hope

Green Pond Bible Chapel is set to hold a funeral service for Lucy on June 15, allowing friends and family to come together to honour her memory and find solace in their shared grief.

In a poignant statement to NBC News, Jesse Morgan expressed his desire for Lucy’s story to serve as a beacon of hope, even in the face of unimaginable tragedy. He shared, “Even though the worst has happened, it has helped others.”
