On the morning of Friday, a tragic incident unfolded in Hiram as a Maine State Police trooper responded to a report of domestic violence. Trooper Zachary Fancy found himself in a life-threatening situation when he encountered a man pointing a firearm at him upon entering the home. In self-defence, Trooper Fancy fired his weapon, resulting in the death of the man, later identified as 39-year-old Steven Nelson of Hiram.

Following the incident, Trooper Fancy will be placed on administrative leave as per standard procedure. The Office of the Maine Attorney General will conduct an investigation into the use of deadly force. Notably, the office has not deemed a police shooting unjustified since at least 1990.

Furthermore, the Maine State Police Major Crimes South unit will be responsible for completing a thorough criminal investigation into the events that transpired in Hiram.
