Bedford, Massachusetts (WBZ) — A tragic incident unfolded in Bedford, Massachusetts on Thursday morning, as 24-year-old Jessica Cavallaro was charged with shooting and killing her parents. Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan revealed that the fatal shooting took place outside a home on Washington Street at approximately 9 a.m.

The victims have been identified as Cavallaro’s parents, Thelma Tatten and Mark Cavallaro, both aged 56. Tragically, Cavallaro’s mother passed away at the scene, while her father succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rushed to the hospital.

According to prosecutors, the couple had planned to take their daughter out for breakfast when the horrific incident occurred. The community has been left reeling from the shocking turn of events, with neighbour Peter Burke expressing his disbelief, stating, “Of course, you never want to see anybody killed or hurt in any neighbourhood. When it’s right in your own backyard, it’s a little more shocking.”

After the shooting, Cavallaro retreated into the house she shared with her boyfriend’s family, where she instructed someone to call 911. Law enforcement officers discovered a handgun at the scene, leading to Cavallaro’s immediate arrest. It was revealed that Cavallaro did not possess the necessary licence to carry the firearm, adding another layer of complexity to the case.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

Following her arrest, Cavallaro was charged with murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, and unlawful possession of a firearm. She appeared in Concord District Court later on Thursday afternoon, where she was ordered to be held without bail. Additionally, she will undergo a psychiatric evaluation and is scheduled to return to court on August 20.

As the investigation continues, District Attorney Ryan disclosed that Cavallaro’s parents also resided in Bedford. The tragic loss of the couple has left their landlord, Bob Kurker, in a state of shock, as he described their deaths as “shocking.”

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, a motive for the shooting has yet to be determined. Neighbours in the tight-knit community are grappling with the aftermath of the tragedy, with one resident, Zoey Kramer, expressing her unease, stating, “It’s a small town so we all kind of, like, know each other and we all know one another. It’s definitely very nerve-wracking.”

Addressing the Issue

During a press conference, District Attorney Ryan highlighted the prevalence of domestic violence incidents involving firearms, emphasising the need for stricter gun control measures. She underscored the importance of addressing the availability of firearms in the hands of individuals who should not possess them, particularly in light of recent tragedies in the community.

As Bedford Police work diligently to investigate the case, Washington Street remains closed to the public for the afternoon, as authorities continue to gather evidence and information related to the shooting.
